The Glory of the Garden Designer

As you know, I'm a bit of a fan of Rudyard Kipling, and I was trying to put my own spin on his poem entitled "The Glory of The Garden". It went a bit off course, but I thought I'd share it with you anyway. I know I should have been doing some other stuff - but when I get the wordy bug I just can't seem to stop.

The Glory of the Garden Designer

Our aim is building gardens that are full of stately views
Of borders, beds and shrubberies and lawns and avenues
With waterworks and terraces - perhaps some modern art
And sometimes it’s impossible to know just where to start

The survey and analysis, let’s get them underway
Far better when it’s snowing, or at least a rainy day
And standing there in wind and hail when nothing could seem dafter
Is vital, if you want to emphasise Before and After.

Our work pertains to gardens and such gardens are not made
By saying “oh how beautiful” and sitting in the shade.
The measurements must all be took and structure put in place
And Ching consulted lest we make a mess of form and space.

Put yourself within it! You must be spatially aware!
And that will never happen from the depths of your armchair.
If you really must sit down, try reading books by Crowe or Lloyd
They help to ascertain the things important to avoid.

It helps to lose your grip on practicality and truth
Put nothing in the earth and grow it all upon the roof
It seems that fads are everything - designs aren’t worth a jot
Unless they’re full of cor-ten steel and logs just left to rot

We strive to innovate, to make the space bizarre and bold
And link it up to what we’ve learned and qualities of old.
Surprise the visitors with ice cold water in their faces!
And yards of snowy concrete, just to emphasise the spaces.

Make it different, make it new, you must have innovation!
How to ensure that passers-by remember your creation?
A glass wall and a waterspout, a lurid box of Perspex
No planting – that would nullify the purity of concept.

But what about the wonder of a new unfurling leaf?
A crystal dewdrop poised to fall upon the earth beneath?
The fat and blowsy borders, which narrow paths in June?
The stillness of the woodlands, beneath a summer moon?

To emphasise a beauty that we cannot replicate
To frame it, serve it up, and just arrange it on the plate.
Surely this is what we do? Or am I all alone?
In thinking we can’t better nature’s glories of her own.

I’ll never be an artist; I know I can’t be taught
I’ll never get to Chelsea or show off at Hampton Court
But one day I’ll make gardens which will only be a canvas
For glorifying nature and the wonders that surround us.

If I can make a difference to a wasted piece of ground
Or plant some trees to outlive me and spread some joy around
These years of slaving, drawing, planning, won't have been for nought
And maybe I'll survive to utilise what I've been taught!

Luckily I didn't ever think I'd make much money
And when I started all my friends just thought it really funny
But when my work is finished I will wash my hands and pray
For the Glory of the Garden, that it may not pass away!

Light at the end of the tunnel

Oh no it's not, it's just an approaching train. Well it's back to the mini-deadlines for me and the first one made a lovely whooshing noise as it went past and I'd missed it. Yesterday I should have completed the lighting concept thingy and I didn't quite get there. Today it's drainage. This is my attempt to start ticking things off the list in preparation for the next lot.

But I have managed to play with photoshop and not lose everything or turn it all green. Here are some of my sketches with a few lights added - it doesn't really show whats happening, but who cares! I was just pleased to get something that looks halfway like a lighting concept!

Ok back to the drains now - can't wait.

Annotate, annotate!

You remember the Daleks in Doctor Who? I keep hearing their weird electronic voices in my head, not saying "EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE" but "ANNOTATE ANNOTATE". We discussed annotation for a long time yesterday. It would be easy now, I imagine, to err on the side of caution i.e. "On the oak decking outside the restaurant there is a woman is called Sheila and she's sitting next to a raised bed, built in concrete and faced with stainless steel. It is planted with Salvia x sylvestris 'Rugen', Salvia nemorosa 'Ostfriesland' and Salvia x sylvestris 'Blauhugel', giving a subtle gradation of colour which puts one in mind of the changing moods of the moors. She is wearing Jimmy Choos, eating a tuna bap and thinking of an ex-boyfriend who she thinks may have nicked her Oasis CD". There could be arrows pointing to the aforementioned bap, shoes and planting. Or, alternatively, "Oak deck, raised planter" with no arrows. I guess there has to be some middle ground which I need to find.

Would love to stay and chat, but I've got one or two little jobs to do.

Life is a rollercoaster

Just got to ride it. Ah! The words of Ronan Keating - how very true.

Bit of a rollercoaster going on here at the moment. One minute up on the crest of the wave because I've got a few things sorted, the next plunging into the depths of despair because the sheer volume of what's left to do overwhelms me like a tsunami.

There were tears this morning when I sat and thought about it. I can't believe the impact this course has had on my life. I spend most of my time apologising - for not being able to take part in anything, for failing to fulfil even the smallest of motherly duties, for singlemindedly ignoring everything and everyone around me. So.. all day I'm saying sorry, which is really bad for my self-esteem - having to apologise for being me, and doing what I want and need to do, somehow makes what I'm trying to achieve seem less, or not worthy. But the worst thing is that I'm such a total bitch to live with. Stress makes me a really horrible person and everyone around me is suffering too.

It's Saturday morning - I've only done two sketches, my model photomontages are not montages at all, they're still just photos of the model, and I'm struggling with photoshop which I've decided should be banned from decent society. All I want to do is lie down in a dark room. And as for the planting plan.....pah!

Here are a few pictures of the model:

Here is my current best (and only) friend in my house. My moose (who has no name) has been very helpful in making my model. He doesn't mind standing around until the glue dries, and listens to me moaning and muttering about life. He just sits patiently with a wry smile on his face. I love him.

OK, that's enough blogging for now, I'm going to carry on with all the other stuff. Hope you're all ok out there in blogland - see you all on Monday.

Felt Tip Frenzy

I don't know if any of you bloggers are fans of the series Black Books, but if you are, you may remember when Bernard was trying to do his accounts and just couldn't make himself do it. At one point he wandered away from his desk and then it cut to him with a pile of socks, saying "well that's all my socks paired up". I know that feeling exactly - and I wanted to share with you that, today, unbelievably, I actually bleached my mugs. I know!! It's incredible the lengths I'm currently going to to avoid doing any real work. I've never bleached a mug before in my life, and it wasn't until I was proudly surveying the pristine whiteness of them that it really hit home. I'm turning into my grandmother.

So - feeling very ashamed I summoned my courage and I went to my felt tip drawer. After a frenzy of scribbling and muttering I ended up with the two initial attempts below. I would have stopped at one, but I guess "sequential sketches" is definitely plural. The answer is in the question. Anyway - better go, I've got the rest of the first series of Black Books to watch, and I think the cat needs a bath.

Hallelujah

Well Happy Easter to you all, and especially to me, because I've finally got the design copied and saved on a CD ready for playing with.

I had it copied in negative as well, which I think looks quite cool and will help me illustrate my lighting concept (should I ever get round to putting it on paper!)

Have been working hard on a new model and I hope to share some pictures of it with you all soon. Those stupid little plastic people at 1:200 are so hard to work with. I think I've got a couple stuck in my hair, which makes me look quite mad.

Right - back to work on the model now. Have a good weekend everyone, don't eat too many eggs.

Scared to blog

Did you miss me? I know, probably not! Well, fellow-bloggers, I've been reading the blogs and getting more and more frightened at the huge leaps forward everyone seems to be making! What a great body of work - sketches, photomontages, details of hard landscaping. I feel like I've slipped through a hole in the space-time continuum and I'm actually 5 weeks behind where my work should be.

Still, you'll all be pleased to hear that I think I've finally resolved the design! Yes, I know I should have done that weeks ago, but these things take time. The holidays (bit of a misnomer) are flashing by and I creep forward day by day, a line here, a tree there, sometimes a decision on something if it's a really good day.

I had to go right back to the beginning to resolve the problems with my area, but I think I'm finally getting somewhere, and whilst none of it is on paper (or at least not in a format that can be presented), it's amazing how many other problems seem to be resolved at the same time. I just hope I can get all the stuff together for the 24th.

Claire and I had a day in London, walking the streets and taking photos. We started at Canary Wharf and walked all the way along the river to Waterloo, stopping at St Katharine's Docks, the Globe, and the Tate Modern along the way. It was great, and we both got lots of images to use and ideas for detailing.

Here's a rough sketch of what's happening on my site now - and the praying hands are my new inspiration! I seem to be doing a lot of that lately.

Must get back to the drawing board. Got lots and lots to do and have already wasted an hour on the blog!
